Why Every Construction Project Needs Concrete Testing – Explained by Stonedge Construction । Why is concrete testing important for construction || importance of concrete testing ||

What is concrete testing?

Concrete testing is an analysis intended to determine the structural integrity of the concrete. It’s usually a part of a more extensive inspection but can also serve as a stand-alone test . Ensuring the construction of a concrete structure meets the specified requirements is an important task . It is all about verifying the proper pour, setting, and construction of concrete. Before constructing a building or other structure, testing the concrete to detect and prevent any flaws that could compromise its stability is important.

What are the main properties of of concrete testing for construction ?

Workability:
The strength of concrete of a given mix proportion is very seriously affected by the degree of its compaction. It is therefore vital that the consistency of the mix be such that the concrete can be transported, placed and finished sufficiently easily and without segregation. A concrete satisfying these conditions is said to be workable.

Durability:
Durability is the property of concrete to withstand the condition for which it has been designed, without deterioration over a period of years. Lack of durability can be caused by external agents arising from the environment or by internal agents within the concrete.

Shrinkage :
Concrete can shrink as it dries, which can result in cracking and other damage. Proper reinforcement and curing can help minimise the effects of shrinkage.

Unit weight :
The unit weight of concrete refers to its density and can vary depending on its composition and strength. A higher unit weight can result in stronger, more durable concrete.

Modular ratio :
This refers to the relationship between the elastic moduli of concrete and the steel reinforcement used to reinforce it. A higher modular ratio can result in stronger, more durable structures.

Types of concrete testing :

Workability Test:

To check the workability and the flowability of fresh concrete a Slump test is carried on to check how easily the concrete can be poured and shaped.Fresh concrete is poured into metal cones in three layers each tamped with a rod. The concrete slumps down when the cone is lifted. Then the difference between slumped concrete and cone is measured. This helps in finding out whether the concrete has the right kind of consistency and is not too watery Or stiff.

Tensile Strength Test :

Evaluates the concrete’s ability to resist tensile stress.
Typically performed using the split cylinder test.
Helps in designing structures that withstand tensile forces.

Water Entrance Test :

The test is run to check the water tightness of concrete which is essential in cases where the structures are exposed to water. The water penetration depth is measured. This helps in determining the water in filtration capacity of the concrete which is necessary in water-retaining structures and foundations.

Air Content Test :

This test determines the amount of air voids in concrete, which affects its durability, especially in freeze-thaw conditions. The pressure method (ASTM C 231) is commonly used, where a sample of fresh concrete is placed in a pressure meter, and the air content is calculated based on pressure changes.

Flexural Strength Test :

This test helps in finding out the tensile strength of concrete to check its ability to resist bending. A testing machine is subjected to bending forces to test concrete beams. The load at which the beam breaks is recorded. Helps in evaluating the crack resistance capacity of concrete under load. This point is to be kept in mind while concrete testing is conducted .

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Methods like ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound hammer tests assess the quality and uniformity of hardened concrete without causing damage. These tests are valuable for evaluating existing structures and identifying potential issues such as voids or cracks.
Construction experts can guarantee that concrete satisfies the necessary criteria by carrying out these tests, resulting in safer and more resilient constructions.

Most common method of concrete testing in construction :

Rebound Hammer Test ( ASTM C805)

Also known as the Schmidt Hammer, this test measures the surface hardness of concrete, which is correlated with its compressive strength. It is a convenient method that can be performed directly onsite.

Wireless Maturity Sensors ( ASTM C1074)

This technique is based on the principle that concrete strength is directly related to its hydration temperature history. Wireless sensors are placed within the concrete formwork, secured on the rebar, before pouring. Temperature data is collected by the sensor and uploaded to any smart device within an app using a wireless connection. This information is used to calculate the compressive strength of the in-situ concrete element based on the maturity equation that is set up in the app.

Drilled Core Test (ASTM C42)
A core drill is used to extract hardened concrete samples from the slab, which are then compressed in a machine to monitor the in-situ concrete strength. This method provides more accurate results compared to field-cured specimens.

Penetration Resistance Test (ASTM C8o3)
To complete a penetration resistance test, a device drives a small pin or probe into the surface of the concrete. The force used to penetrate the surface, and the depth of the hole, is correlated to the strength of the in-place concrete.

Pullout Test (ASTM C900)

The main principal behind this test is to pull the concrete using a metal rod that is cast-in-place or post-installed in the concrete. The pulled conical shape, in combination with the force required to pull the concrete, is correlated to compressive strength.

Benefits of concrete testing :

Comply with industry regulations:
Correct use of cement testing practices ensures your business meets industry standards and regulations. Customers prefer to work with compliant partners, as this indicates the work is of an acceptable quality level.

Cost Savings:
Automated cement testing systems can result in cost savings in the long run. While the initial investment in automated systems may be higher, the increased efficiency, improved accuracy, and reduced labor costs can lead to overall cost savings in the quality control process. Additionally, early detection of quality issues can help prevent costly product recalls, rework, or customer complaints

Determine the cause of problems:
Tests provide insights into concrete’s properties, so you can quickly determine the reason when issues arise. This knowledge lets you effectively address the problem and prevent it from happening again.

Increased Safety:
Automated cement testing systems reduce the exposure of operators to hazardous materials and potentially risky testing procedures. Automated systems can perform tests that involve heavy loads, high pressures, or hazardous chemicals, minimizing the risk of accidents or injuries. This contributes to a safer working environment for testing personnel.

Find out the Root Cause :
By using this technique of testing on continual basis if any issue arises one can analyze the reason why the problem arise. So through proper addressing of the raised issue proper fixing can be done and the same would not arise in future.

Compliance with Standards:
Cement testing is essential to comply with industry standards and regulations. There are various international, national, and local standards that specify the quality requirements for cement used in construction. Cement strength testing, durability testing, and materials testing are often conducted to ensure compliance with these standards, which helps in achieving regulatory compliance and ensures that the constructed structures are safe and durable.

Why is concrete testing important for construction?

Concrete is commonly used in all types of construction structures, large and small, from roads, pavements, bridges, tall buildings, and embankments.
Therefore, concrete testing is essential for the safety, durability and quality of construction projects.
To ensure the stability of the concrete structure, structural engineers need to test the concrete to measure the compressive strength of the material. The location of delamination in concrete can be determined. Both concrete crack patching and locating are facilitated with it. It is very important to test the concrete in order to know how good the concrete is and and how much air is in it and how it affects its performance.

Concrete testing is a very important component that is required for the safety, durability, longevity and success of a construction project. Concrete testing can also eliminate costly repairs and stand the test of time. These tests help engineers evaluate the durability and long-term performance of concrete structures.
Properly using concrete testing components by meeting standard guidelines helps a builder, contractor or property owner make an informed decision on a construction project and move towards the success of your construction project.
